Communion

I’m not Catholic
But I take communion every morning
Standing alone in the kitchen
Choosing the largest bran flake from my bowl
Placing it on my tongue
Feeling it soften and begin to dissolve
Feeling past sins
Contemplating future ones

(“Communion” originally appeared in the August, 2011 issue of Midwest Literary Magazine.)
