A Step at a Time

Sidewalks of shoppers
trample and swerve their way
on Saturday. A white-haired man
pauses.
Waiting for courage to go on,
he says, stopping to get his breath.
He leans on his cane, remembering a day
when he, too, thought tomorrow mattered.
