A Step at a Time

Sidewalks of shoppers
trample and swerve their way
on Saturday. A white-haired man
pauses.
Waiting for courage to go on,
he says, stopping to get his breath.
He leans on his cane, remembering a day
when he, too, thought tomorrow mattered.

Susan Carter Morgan is a former teacher and writer from a historic town in Virginia. Her work appears or will appear in Brevity Poetry Review, Haunted Waters Press, Dead Mule School of Southern Literature, and The Front Porch.
