Calligraphy with Ball

Kids toss the ball that Ryokan hides
in his robe, like to play tricks on him,
like the day he hid in an outhouse
and they ran away.
He didn’t mind. Enlightenment

visits there too. When the kids
return home, he ambles back
to his barren hut. Drowsy,
he watches the moon rise.

His dreams, a calligraphy written
from light and shadow.

Jennifer Inside

the house a passion flower,
a red star,
blooms in the blue glass pot—

the end of another year,
red against silver frost
on the window.

Kenneth Pobo needs to watch Beyond The Forest again.  A month without Bette Davis, unthinkable!  He was doing the hula yesterday (badly).
