Footprint
(after the painting by Sam Francis)

The creature that made
these prints
out of hibernation
from its glacial cave
it must be blue itself
it must be huge
blue ridges and whorls
in its step
blue-born species
known only by its gait
thought to be extinct
it left its mark in
snow.

Madame Butterfly
(after the woodcut by Helen Frankenthaler)

From chrysalis
to butterfly
the sound of wings
emerging from
their soft-sleep night
in bursts of light
too soon to fade
waiting to be born
again
in spring.

Neil Ellman lives and writes in New Jersey. His poems, many of them ekphrastic, appear in numerous international print and online journals.
